Very welcome backpackers
We spend 2 nights. Little backpackers clean , friendly , with breakfast.
Some mistake with the computer booking online and during the wait time, the manager offer To us some beers.
All good , i recommended it !

Not sure how this place gets good reviews
I have no idea how this place has gotten such good reviews. Who is being paid off? It was physically a dump (water leaking everywhere on ground floor-- from washing machine AND freezers; grungy bathrooms and showers; no toilet paper for more than 18 hours in the three toilets on ground floor;faucets falling apart; rundown everything) and some of the staff was outright rude. The breakfast was disgusting and should not even be considered a perk. They put out two loaves of white bread and once gone, it's gone. So basically less than a quarter of guests could even have breakfast. Oh yeah, and smokers were planted outside the windows of the ground floor rooms all night. They allow 6 vans of people to park in back, so you end up sharing three toilets and two showers on the ground floor with >30 people. Icing on the cake was that they updated the checkout time to 10am (from 10:30) on the morning of our check out, too. We had a rental car pickup at 9:30 (which we set up based on their published and confirmed checkout time) and then barely made it back in time. Avoid avoid avoid this place! Many nicer and comparably priced options in Nelson.

Hi Carolyn. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review, we appreciate all feedback no matter how nasty. We have hundreds of positive reviews and to suggest we pay people off is not only ridiculous but actually takes credibility away from evening else you are saying.
Our hostel is run a little different to many others, and we close mid Feb every season. We do this so our busy season is short but can be packed and allow us to make sure every guest that stays has an amazing experience, not only in our hostel but in the Nelson region. It sounds like the day you were here is the day our hostel closed which is why the check out time was shortened for a single day.
During our closure we have an opportunity to get all of the maintenance done so the taps and freezers etc will all get a really good check over before we have another guest. After a massive season we obviously have a couple things to repair! As for the missing toilet paper, or smokers smoking outside of their designated areas a simple note to our reception staff would have had this sorted immediately for you, I am sure you can appreciate the fact that when the place is busy these kind of things can happen without our knowledge..
So yes at the end of a very busy season we obviously have some things to work on and improve, we take great pride in being one of Nelson's best reviewed hostels and take all reviews seriously. Your false claims of us paying reviewers off is upsetting (which btw unless you have some kind of proof, then you should possibly remove it from your review as I am sure any half decent lawyer could make a solid defamation case) but this aside we will take your comments seriously and be sure to re open next summer better and more organized!

Terrible Ownership and Terrible Stay
The hostel is very run down, with no toilet paper in many toilet stalls, the kitchen was shabby with knobs falling off the sink, and there was not enough food for guests (by 8:30am) despite the inclusion of a "free breakfast" in the price.
Also, note that if you book in on a Monday, you can have absolutely zero alcohol on premises, even if you bring your own. We had some friends that brought their own and had to get rid of it that night as they were tramping the next day. They were told to drink it outside on the grass
The owner was quite unresponsive in several questions that we asked of him regarding storing our bikes. It also sounds like he laid off most of his staff at the last minute for a large group that was renting the entire place for several months. Some of them were crying because they didn't have anything else lined up yet.
On top of all this, we were told that we had to leave half an hour earlier than our confirmation said on our day of departure.
Stay away from this one, plenty of nicer hostels in Nelson.

Yes our hostel is leased by a very large group which means we close mid to late Feb each year, sorry if this closure effected your time with us, as you can imagine on the last day of operation we try and predict breakfast demand as to not have wastage once we close.
Regards to alcohol you are correct we have a no alcohol policy as we have a licensed bar on.site and our license restricts us to only having alcohol in the bar area. The buetiful grass area directly opposite us generally acts as the ideal location to enjoy a couple of your own beverages however yes I can accept it won't suit everyone!
Staff wise unfortunately you are iincorrect or mis lead, all our staff know well in advance what date we close and all staff wanting further work we make sure they have it.
Thanks again for the review, it gives us plenty to work on for.next year's "closing date"

Cheap, no frills hostel
I had a mixed experience. I needed a cheap place to stay for one night to drop off my rental car and fly the next day. Its certainly no frills compared with other hostels around nz which is fine but just come prepared. I mainly booked it for the location and the free shuttle but the airport shuttle only runs from 10am so I had to pay for my own taxi anyway.
It’s opposite to where the beach is located and the bar sits on the view of a grassy area which was nice.
The free breakfast was white bread with assorted spreads and some wheat bisks. Apparently they hadn’t put the milk out and instead I thought some other milk was on the side and it came out lumpy so I skipped having cereal and tea. The staff were walking around in their dressing gowns/pjs in the morning, which was a bit odd. Two of them live in a car in the car park so maybe the shower wasn’t free for them at the time. I didn’t meet the famous Ryan.
It’s fine for one night but compared with other hostels I’ve stayed in during my trip for the same price, not sure it’s 5/5 for me.

Best hostel manager!
This hostel is great, right across the road from the beach and has excellent staff. Ryan and his squad really go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable and at home here. 10/10 would stay here again, no doubt.
