Bugs at the Hostel
My stay at Mad Monkey Phuket was a major disappointment for several reasons. I expected a fun hostel experience, but instead, I encountered serious hygiene and service issues.
1. Hygiene & Room Conditions:
Over three consecutive days, I found unwanted animals in my dorm room—on the toilet seat, the floor, and eventually even on my bed. After escalating the situation and threatening to cancel, I was moved to a replacement room, which unfortunately had a significant amount of mold in the shower. Additionally, the Wi-Fi in the rooms was completely insufficient for any kind of work.
2. Overpriced Pub Crawl & Commission-driven Vibe:
The Pub Crawl (500 Baht) was a total letdown. For the price, I received only about 3-4 shots in total at below-average bars. It felt like the hostel was simply leading us to venues where they receive a commission, rather than providing a quality guest experience.
3. Inappropriate Pressure for 5-Star Reviews:
What shocked me most was the behavior of the staff. Despite being aware of the hygiene issues in my room, I was repeatedly and aggressively pushed to leave a 5-star review and mention specific staff names. This happened three times. It is clear that staff are incentivized to solicit high ratings even when the guest experience has been poor. This makes the overall rating of this hostel very misleading.
4. Zero Customer Support:
After reporting these issues, the customer service promised an update within 48 hours. It has now been over a week, and despite multiple follow-ups, I have been completely ignored.
Conclusion:
Between the pests, the mold, the overpriced activities, and the pushy "review culture," I cannot recommend this hostel. There are far better, cleaner, and more honest places to stay in Phuket.

Mad Monkey Hostel Phuket – simple party hostel in a good location
The Mad Monkey in Patong is exactly what the name promises: a simple establishment with a distinct party character that is clearly aimed at a young, party-loving crowd. Anyone who knows this and is looking for it will get good value for money here. Anyone expecting peace and quiet is at the wrong address.
Location:
The hostel is located at the northern end of Patong. Depending on the access point, it is about a five to ten-minute walk to Patong Beach, and around ten to fifteen to Bangla Road with its nightlife. Supermarkets, 7-Eleven, street food stalls, and restaurants are practically right outside the door. The location is therefore one of the hotel's strongest points: central enough for everything, but not directly in the loudest part of Patong.
Arrival:
It is about 30 kilometers from Phuket Airport (HKT), 45 to 60 minutes, whereby the. The fixed-price taxis at the counter in the arrivals hall cost approximately 800 to 1,000 THB; you can usually travel a bit cheaper via Grab.
Rooms:
I had a single room. The furnishings are simple and functional; in some places, you can tell the building has seen intensive use—overall, however, it is just barely acceptable for this price range.
Breakfast:
The clear weak point. The process seemed completely uncoordinated, the service was unstructured, and requests or deviations from the standard were hardly addressed. Those who want to leave early or would like to have breakfast outside of the narrow core hours are out of luck. Given the many affordable breakfast options in the area, this is tolerable, but it remains annoying nonetheless.
Atmosphere:
The clientele is predominantly young, with many solo travelers and backpackers. The common areas are generously sized—the bar, restaurant area, pool area, and seating corners offer plenty of space, making it easy to strike up a conversation with others. In the evenings, there are regularly organized events such as pub quizzes, beer pong, or pub crawls.
The people at the front desk are great!

MM was the best, I loved it, Connor made it the best time ever and he made it so social!!
